Marx Lrg DC4-OVERHAUL

Postby soslipstream » Sat Jan 02, 2010 2:51 am

Happy New Year to All! I tried to get a picture up on my latest project but instead have put on Ebay. Look at here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/VTG-Old-Marx-Lrg-Pr ... 2a03c14296

There is plenty of items worked on but the question I have for the future is whether I should paint the Marx figures (passengers) or leave them in the original, neutral tones?

Thanks,
Tom Sanders

Looks really, really good! Is the boarding ramp part of the original package?
...at this point I would expect you would have to paint the passengers!
Nice work!

Best I can find the airplanes with the optional doors were sold the stairs as a package. But... Louis Marks was a little loose on convention so he left ot to the retailers to sell the units as they pleased. The 'air-stairs" are a Marx product. There was never an actual "Playset" from Marx that included what I have put together, its just my little market version. There was an "International Airport Playset" by Marx that included buildings, fences, awnings, a tractor and baggage trucks. I am pondering finding one, or parts, and using it to bacdrop future projects. The 35 mm people were originally offered with train sets but Marx realized that they would work in the International Airport playset as well. Hence their inclusion with my auction.

BTW, I will be working on an American Airlines version of this DC4 and have a couple more in the offing. Any opinions or ideas are certainly welcome!

Tom, if you want some inspiration, there was a club that published a series of highly researched issues on Marx {and Remco etc..} playsets. There is one that covers the airport playsets, and there were several different airport sets issued. you can find the back issues on ebay, and also you can find the loose pieces from the sets....
For the superb magazine go to
http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid ... Categories
{the S.A.C. issue no 37 is sensational, it seems to be one of the rarest sets too!. It describes a large Marx B-52 that I have never seen that was only sold in this set}
The guys who published the magazine were fanatics- if one of them found an unopened stapled set, they would all get together and have an opening party, certifying each bag and the entire contents.....
I was too old to play with these sets, I was in high school when they were issued,1960-2 or there abouts, but I have several of them now, just waiting for my kids to get to old enough to play with them.

There is also a yahoogroup for Marx Playset collectors, of which the Airplanes are just a part. I don't have the URL in front of me, but it should be easily searchable at yahoo.

Hey All,
I just snagged a Marx International Airport-accesories only tonite. I don't need the building, just the bits to flesh out an airplane's "arrival". Thanks for the comments, they are well appreciated. BTW, I rebuild the Marx airplanes and Hubley airplanes to fund my quest for certain "airplane ashtrays". Am still looking for a 4th Allyn Sales P-51 Mustang if anyone has a lead.

Ok Crew,
Here are three Marx large DC4 Airliners. The one on left has been overhauled as is currently on auction on Ebay.
The next one is an earlier unit is first generation without the open door option. It will be overhauled in the American Airlines livery. My plan is to create a display that includes toy tanker truck, in common scale, with its hose attached to the wing as if fueling during a layover. The next is a battered unit that includes the open door so worth the effort. Another DC4 is currently in transit and will be slotted depending on effort & cost needed to overhaul. All will eventually be overhauled and offered for sale.

Tom, I see the plane sold for $250.00. Congratulations, and the buyer must be a happy camper, too. Excellent idea and execution.

Thanks,
I have three more in the "HANGER". I can proceed with "overhauling" those now that the concept has been validated. The next does not have the "opening door" option. It will be presented with a fuel truck that has a fuel hose "engaged" with the airplane's wing. I plan to do it in American livery and stage it with a Marx terminal pieces in the backround.

Did you see that there is another on auction for one with the wheel/prop spin option?
