K in diamond trademark, see KOYO KINZOKU.
The letter "K" in a diamond with intersecting ends is Koyo Kinzoku. This firm produced numerous small tin toy airplanes.

K in three concentric circles broken into four arcs, see SANKEI OKUMA.

K trademark, stylized(Possibly KEIICHI KOGYOSHO - per Kevin Dockerill's web site)
Two solid triangles form the letter “K.” The mostly plastic 727s come in two sizes. The smaller ones were sold in window boxes and were marked with the name “Cragstan,” a US toy importer. These are scale models. The larger toys, with their folding wings and flat underbellies, are poor models. They could either be “gyro powered” (friction) or battery. Sometimes these, too, were sold under the “Cragstan” name. The "Flying Colors" Braniff International color scheme is notable.

Airliners, Jet:

Boeing 727, 7” WS, 9” L, friction, scale model, marked Cragstan, mostly plastic, tin upper fuselage, in the following color schemes:
American Airlines, silver/grey with red stripe.
Braniff International “Flying Colors,” orange.
TWA, grey plastic, white/red upper fuselage.
United, grey plastic, white/blue upper fuselage.

Boeing 727, 12" WS, battery, lighted plastic jet pods, grey plastic folding wings, grey plastic lower fuselage, white plastic tail, lithographed tin upper fuselage, “Cragstan.”

Braniff International, orange lithographed upper fuselage with stylized black titles, N1544.
Boeing 747, 10" WS, 11” L, friction, plastic folding wings, lower fuselage and tail.
Pan American, blue plastic, blue stripe atop lithographed tin upper fuselage (like All-Nippon), blue cheat line, black and red titles.

KOYO KINZOKU
Koyo Kinzoku was a Japanese firm that specialized in small friction toy airplanes in the 1960s and 70s. The trademark was a K inside a diamond with intersecting ends. Like several other simple small tin airplanes, the Boeing 707 / Douglas DC-8 jet liners have flat jet engines lithographed on the wings! The toys' small size and great variety makes them fun to collect today. Marchesini of Bologna, Italy used similar tooling. US-based toy distributors sometimes packed Koyo Kinzoku toys in plastic header bags with cardboard stapled shut over them so they could hang on racks. They sold for about a quarter. One unusual designation is that of XF8B-1, a real-life 1940s Boeing design with twin three-blade props on a single shaft; the toy, of course, has no props at all. Koyo Kinzoku should not be confused with Ohta, whose trademark was K inside a circle, a different company to which these airplanes are often attributed.

An American distributor used the brand name Lucky Toy for small, inexpensive Japanese-made toys sold in "header bags," i.e. a plastic bag with a punched cardboard rectangle, folded over and stapled so it could hang on a rack. Though some Ichimura and S2 brand toy planes were packaged as such, other Lucky Toy planes have no manufacturer's mark and cannot be identified further. Furthermore, Kevin Dockerill states that Kashiwai (see) traded as Lucky Toy. The 707 is flat-looking, and surviving examples often lack the tail fin.

MANGOLD, Georg Adam (GAMA trademark)
GAMA's German-made Boeing Stratocruisers were made of heavy tin plate and generally fitted with twin strong friction motors. A single battery inside the body, situated atop the wings, lighted the wing lights on most examples of the toys, though some were fitted with hand-held remote control mechanisms. They came in the typical Pan American World Airways 50s colors or the revised "jet age" livery, with medium blue globe on the tail fin. White paint seen applied to the upper fuselages might be "factory original." Tin, wheeled stairways, also bearing Pan American titles, were nice accessories. GAMA continued its line of airliners into the 60s, making contemporary jets, and the firm also made die cast toy vehicles. According to Mark Driver, Gama's H-15 Helicopter is similar to a toy made by the Italian toy train manufacturer LIMA, as well as a Japanese tin toy from "Empress Playtime" in the 60s.

M Brands Part 2

Postby Tone » Thu Feb 24, 2011 3:19 am

MARX, LOUIS, CO. and LINE MAR TOYS
The Louis Marx Co began after World War I and soon specialized in tin wind-up toys. By the 1950s the firm was making miniature replicas of everything in metal and plastic, and distributing them widely. While the headquarters were located in New York City, factories were located in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The Line Mar tin toy brand, with its extensive line of friction and battery toys, existed from about 1956 through 1962. Marx was producing less tin toys in the United States and decided that selling a line of toys made in Japan would be a viable alternative. The brand name derives from "Mar Lines" used for train sets in the 1930s. Toy aircraft were often made from tooling used by other companies, particularly Nikko Gangu Kogyo. These include the very fine DC-7 #J-2019 Battery-Operated Airplane with Automatic Turn Over Propellers, seen in the Sears Wish Book catalog from 1958 through 1961. Line Mar liked to transform one airplane into something completely different or mix different parts. Hence, a Boeing Stratocruiser became a Capital Airlines "Viscount." A 707 jetliner body was merged with an entirely new set of Bristol Britannia wings and marked as a Northwest "DC-7!" Eddie Rickenbacker’s SPAD and Lindbergh’s Ryan Spirit of St. Louis share the same fuselage and tail surfaces. Clever slogans printed on the boxes were "Line Mar, Best by Far" and "One of the many Linemar toys. Do you have all of them?" Line Mar sold its line of die cast toys as well, made from pot metal or "antimony," named Elegant Miniatures.

From around 1963 Marx toys, particularly the airplanes, imported from Japan and Hong Kong had a trademark with the entire name "MARX" rather than the traditional "MAR" superimposed on the railroad crossing sign with the X in the background. Imported toys are clearly marked with the name of the country of origin. Though production officially ceased in 1979, some Marx toys were re-issued in the 1990s.

MASUDAYA
"Modern Toys" or Masudaya, whose trademark is a T superimposed upon an M, in a diamond, all within an oval, was founded in the 1920s. The streamlined high-wing "Ryusen" monoplane was an early aeronautical product. This firm, along with the Spanish firm Juguetes y Estuches, using similar tooling, issued the very best of the tin Boeing 727s among its aeronautical toy products, in two sizes. Masudaya issued the only tin toys of the famous and long-lived C-130 Hercules and the dramatic YF-12, which became the SR-71 Blackbird. There is a grey F-111 battery toy military jet with working swing wings in this series. The unmarked Taiwan TWA DC-9 could also be from this firm, as both this toy and the F-111 have the same, stenciled red letters on the boxes.

METTOY
Britain's Mettoy had a line of tin planes in the 1930s that continued in the late 1940s. Most of them were wind-up toys with single propellers, but Mettoy made a jet airliner by fitting a Douglas DC-2 with red plastic engine pods. The firm's attractive line of die cast Corgi Toys, introduced in 1956, became wildly successful.

The same tooling was used for all the airplanes, with changes in lithography and additional two small extra tail fins for the Connie. Variants of the Constellation were made with the Line Mar and Louis Marx trademarks, most famously with Mickey Mouse! It is likely that neither MSK nor Shi Shi (i.e., small dog) brand name was an actual manufacturer; rather, they were toy exporters.

MŌMŌYA - Peach trademark
Japan's Momoya produced a variety of tin toy airplanes in the 1950s and 1960s that are so stylized that one cannot accurately identify them. An Eastern Air Lines Constellation was made using "stereotypical 1950s airliner" tooling fitted with a triple tail! NIKKŌ GANGU KŌGYŌ (N-G-K) and NOMURA (T.N trademark)
Nikkō Gangu Kōgyō is a prolific Japanese toy brand with a distinctive symbol: a "G" surrounding a circle into which fits a thin, curving "N" and "K." Most toy planes with this trademark also feature the T.N in a diamond for Toys Nomura. The two companies are distinct entities, but it is impossible to tell which one was the actual manufacturer, and which one acted as the export agent. Furthermore, the same tooling was used to make several Line Mar and Marx toy planes; therefore, a battery 707 jet with 14 1/2" wing span in American Airlines markings with the T.N trademark was also sold in TWA markings with the Marx trademark. This very 707 fuselage, modified to incorporate clear plastic cabin windows, also became a Lockheed Electra fuselage! N-G-K / T.N excelled at making the most of its tooling, with abundant variants (including surprising choices such as Libyan Arab Airlines), and usually good quality fittings and lithography.

Not every N-G-K / T.N brand toy airplane was stereotypical in appearance. The beautiful model of a 1920s Ford 4-AT tri-motor was modeled on NX4542, the example preserved on display in the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan. The Republic Sea Bee "Clipper" amphibian, with its above-fuselage pusher propeller, is another notable Nikko Gangu toy plane, a model that other manufacturers ignored. The Super DC-3 airplane is particularly interesting: though not a true scale model, it is the only toy replica of this plane. This scarce toy represents Douglas' post-World War Two attempt to modernize its DC-3 at a time when relatively cheap war surplus aircraft glutted the market. As a result, Douglas built very few Super DC-3s, and the public was unfamiliar with this aircraft. These toys contrast with the usual N-G-K / T.N products.

Toys Nomura continued to sell battery toy airliners with stylized shapes made in Hong Kong through the late 70s into the 1980s; because only T.N appears on the boxes and the toys, the manufacturer is clear. As late as the 1990s Taiwan's Son Ai Toys reissued an F-14 Tomcat that is nearly identical to the original Nikko Gangu version from the 70s; the "N-G-K" trademark even remains as part of the lithographed finish.

Those with the 14" wingspan used the Canadair 44 wings, while those with the 16" wingspan had Electra wings fitted to the Boeing 707 fuselage modified to incorporate the round Electra tail fin. Most Electras had lighted interiors with clear plastic, raised-relief flight deck and cabin windows; those sold with the Marx trademark do not. NIKKŌ GANGU KŌGYŌ and NOMURA Jet Liners
The Boeing Strato Jet was an early battery model from 1957. It is lithographed to look like a bomber and it is unusual in two ways: it has lighted red and green jet pods, and it runs continuously on the floor instead of stopping and starting. Later N-G-K and T.N jetliners were made with lithographed tin upper parts with molded plastic lower parts. Their transparent red jet pods were mounted on white plastic pylons, and they contained blinking midget Christmas lights. The Boeing 707s and 747s with the 13" wingspans share similar tooling, the 747s having been modified to incorporate the famous raised forward fuselage. The latter were widely exported, and were made in various airline colors.

The Douglas DC-9 is an accurate scale model that incorporates an amusing "opening door with setting ladder." As the cabin door opens, a red plastic staircase emerges from the plane and the tin flap with the waving stewardess moves into place. The DC-9's front wheels pull the plane along, eliminating the ungainly motor housing below the wings.

The Lockheed Starlifter military air cargo plane was made using the same tooling as the blue Marx version, but the N-G-K / T.N toy has an opening nose with a small green plastic Jeep inside. A similar feature appears on at least one 747 cargo jet toy.

Tone, here are some more Rico tin toys
I found it strange that they did a Hurricane {prewar?} as it didn't serve with their air force. Another Spanish make did a very similar toy and I have seen it chromed {and a different size}.
Tthe DH Racer is another oddity as it didn't fly in spain at all. Several variants were made of it with differences in landing gear and finish, I believe mine is prewar but don't know for sure.
