thanks for that info tom. Sure would like to interview the toy designers from the late 40-60s, but I guess most have passed on.

There is a very good book out there called Hubley Toy Vehicles: 1946-1965, written by Steve Butler. I see it for sale on Ebay all the time. It has all the Hubley toys listed by the Model number and gives a list of the dates of manufactuer, color, size and values. It it published in sections, Aircraft is thus a section of its own. They are all there. The book says that the 495 was first produced in 1956 in the Silver and red colors, and the 495 was produced until 1965. There is some confusion which colors were used in the last three years. The 495,was also sold in sets. like the Air Race set, 1956, the aircraft carrier set, 1963, the Fighter-Bomber Squadron set, 1957-58. Also the Air Comand set, 1958. THe Navy Airfield set, 1958. And of course the Flying Circuis set most commenly seen. The book is very well done with a lot of pictures of the different color conbinations and original box's. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Hubley aircraft. The ISBN# is 0-7643-1405-X to anyone who is interested.

Here is a picture of one of the 1956, early run, 495's that was restored last year. Note the lack of a "hump" introduced in later runs.

Thanks Mike, I will get a copy.
I would have thought that they were earlier than that but I do recall buying the Flying Circus editions in retail outlets late 1970s so it makes sense.
Thanks again for the details

the silver and red is my next plane to get. I learne dof teh no hump about 6 months ago, and sadly passed of a number of ebay. But teh question is do I wait for a plane in great shape or get one to redo? I built my own log home, so i guess I'm handy lol. I was also a tool freak years ago, so i can see a nice small paint booth. but the parts are so expensive for the final value. $25 a pop for each cockpit pieces and decals and maybe a prop?
Now if there was a place to get the cockpit cheaper i would be doing this as a hobby for sure.

Top pic is my 1st plane.
bottom pic is teh bottom of teh plane and shows the rubs form the box. I did not even notice the big rub the first time I looked at it.

toyplaneguy, Mike, I looked for the Hubley book on ebay and found one paperback copy for $75 from the UK not including shipping.
I went to amazon.com and found the same book, new for $19.00

Here is a pair of pictures to update the project Hubley 495- First Edition w/ original box. Having done concours show cars in my past, I can appreciate how many bits are involved to assure that a proper restoration is achieved. I believe that this first-run 495 has all its "numbers" correct in every aspect. It even features an original prop. I will put this up for auction at ebay shortly.
