Pictured below is a very small Sanyo brand DC-9. These toys were sold individually, loose, or boxed in an assorted set of five. The company, which marked its numerous toys with an "S2" inside a diamond, made these very small planes from the 50s into the late 80s. They were always friction-powered with the little protruding strut for the third wheel.

Like the Convair 990, the DC-9 isn't as easy to find as other little planes. Also like the 990, it has the maker's name along with a prominent airline operator, in this case TWA.

Historians consider these to be the "penny toys" of the 60s and 70s. They sold for a quarter apiece at gift shops.
