Twin prop plane of the future

Postby Tone » Wed Nov 25, 2009 6:22 pm

This twin prop plane of the future, issued 1957, came in American and Eastern colors. The original props would have had metal blades. Tomiyama and Yonezawa trade marks. It has a raised flight deck like that of a Viscount, and turboprop engines. The swept tail fin adds to the unusual appearance. This plane reminds me of one of those DeHavilland Dove modifications and it would not have been out of place in a 1970s commuter airline.

tone, you come up with some things I have never seen before and this and that Kemline B-29 are more examples. Great stuff and thanks for posting.

Twin prop plane of the future

Postby Tone » Mon Apr 29, 2013 2:46 pm

For years I have wanted to have metal props on this thing. On Saturday I bought a small sheet of aluminium for less than $2. Sunday morning I proceeded to make them.

The sheet is 4" wide so I started out by making two rough 2" squares. Photos I have seen show large, squared-off props. The originals came in two pieces that were placed over the shaft and connected to each spinner using four bent tabs. I decided to keep things quick and simple.

Here are two paper props I made that will be about the same size and shape of the metal replacements. I cut them crudely and then I shaped them using my metal cutters.

Below, cutting the second prop.

I poked a hole in each of them using a hammer and small tack, then I cut a slit so I could easily attach the props without mutilating the wing or disconnecting the shafts. These are only for display. Maybe someday I will make a proper pair or props and attach them correctly, or hire somebody more experienced to do so.
