Tekno SAS DC-8???

Postby craviola990 » Mon Mar 12, 2012 11:30 am

Hi Guys-

Can anyone confirm or deny that the Caravelle was the only jetliner that Tekno did?

When I was a kid, for years mom would say she saw a Tekno SAS DC-8 at Magasines department store in downtown Copenhagen, but I think the Caravelle was the only jetliner, correct?

From childhood, the ones I owned were; SAS DC-7C; one in "Proper" "Airlines System" livery, and one in incorrect "Scandinavian" livery, which I'm pretty sure the 7s were either gone by '68, or never rerpainted as such...and what's with the purple colour on those?!

Other two were the Swissair Caravelle, and F-100 Super Sabre, and I recall that the "Stars & Bars" were upside down...were all the '100s like this?

Christian.
Tekno did not make a DC-8, What your mother saw was probably an Aeromini DC-8 but it was not officially made in SAS livery. It was produced in JAl {only for JAL use, not sold in the USA}, Eastern, and Air Canadia. It has the ‘Tekno’ look and as you know Tekno inspired the Aeromini line.

Incidently, There were a number of official Aeromini 747s made but Brian Tomkins of the UK made other variants using Aeromini castings, like a TAP and British 747. These can easily be distinguished as the Tompkins’ transfer/decal for the upper lever had 10 windows and the original Aerominis had only 3.

Tekno made 8 versions of the DC-7C
SAS ‘blue’
SAS ‘violet’
Swissair
Alitalia
Sudflug
Sabena
KLM –with 2 versions of the tail transfer/decals. One sith diagonal stripes, the other with red white and blue rudder.

Tekno sold the tooling to the DC-7c to Mecline of Norway which did a SAS DC-7 too, and others such as an F-100 In Danish AF markings These variants had the Mecline Norway name under the wing, not Tekno.

Tekno made several versions of the Caravelle
Air France
Swiss Air
SAS

Other Tekno aircraft included:
An SAI KZ IV ambulance plane in many versions, also a larger one in tin.
A B-17 in many versions
A Benheim in many versions
Dauntless Dive Bomber in many versions
A Hunter in RAF makings
An F-100 in USAF markings
Dassault Super Mystere
A MIG 15 in green and a much rarer variant in red.- both had Russian markings

All of the above will be available in early May at the Vectis toy auction in the UK and on line {Liveauctioneers}

The B-17s were apparently issued first during the Nazi Occupation in 1944 according to a Danish collector. The Nazi’s did not find that amusing and accordingly some B-17 were produced in Nazi markings! I have never seen one.

GR, this is just fantastic info, my thanks again. It's a real treat to listen to you and Tony especially. Only been around here a couple weeks and you guys have come forth with so much great info.

I'm reasonably knowledgeable on all the old kits, but I cherish the memory of all these toys, and tying up these loose ends of what little I did know is great. I recall when I saw my first Aero-Mini; a TWA 747, and was thrilled to see "New" Teknos...that's really what I thought when I was a kid too.

I had forgotten about the Air Force 747s too...after your mention, I can picture them now, seeing them for a brief while at Talbot's Toyland in San Mateo, CA, near where I grew up. Only found out about the Air Canada DC-8s a few years ago myself.

I seem to recall that a United DC-8s was announced...Air Progress magazine I think, but was never issued, correct?

Michael Bludworth is a good friend, great guy, and glad to see him aboard helping to run the show.

Could be but I haven't seen one. The firm that produced the Aerominis in Japan issued a DC-10 for domestic sale only, I believe. Looks a lot like an Aeromini. Tone and some others know the story better than I.

Always thought that the Super VC-10 (A gorgeous aircraft anyway), was the best looking and most authentic of the Aero-Mini line.

Christian - it's great to hear stories about Tekno collecting here on the forum. Just use the search box and type Tekno to see the previous discussions and lots of photos. I discovered Tekno in the late 1960s, in Copenhagen also. When was your Mother there? Pre or post 1972 when Tekno went out of business? I remember seeing Teknos in Magasin and in Thorngreens toy store on the walking street... Magasin is a large department staore and is still there (no more Teknos though)! Karl

Here is one of my Super Sabres:

Tekno sold the tooling of some of the later aircraft to a company in Norway, Mecline. Does anyone have a complete list as to what they produced?
The quality was identical, you have to look underneath to find 'Mecline Norway' instead of 'Tekno'.

I have seen a Super sabre F-100 in Danish markings too as well as a USAF one without
the upper fuselage sides registration. Was this last a factory error?

The Mecline-Tekno connection is well known but what they produced is not. From what I have heard, the import tax laws were such that Tekno sent either the molds or castings over to Norway. Then Mecline assembled or cast and assembled the cars and planes. No idea how many Tekno castings were made in Norway by Mecline - 2 cars and a plane have been seen online, that is all...

Flyingtiger - many of the old decals are brittle and fall off, or easily scraped off by a kid, so I would not call it an error. Even if it left the factory like that, it was probably the last run and they had run out of decals... Just a guess.

Many items in my extensive Tekno collection including some excellent condition DC-7Cs will be sold end June by Vectis. The catalog is not up yet, and you need to register for the liver and internet bidding, but you can get a preview here:
