Sears "International Airport" Playset-1964

Postby craviola990 » Tue Feb 21, 2012 5:14 am

Hi Guys-

New to the forum as of today, and thanks to Michael Bludworth for the add!

Ironically, the day I signed on (Today), to ask about this playset, is the same day that my brother came up with this past eBay auction for the set that I had way back in '64:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... true&rt=nc

Needless to say, I was thrilled to see this after so many years of wondering about it, and wanted to know if anyone here knows any more about it; from when to when it was available, was it only available exclusively through Sears, pics of the original box, who the manufacture was, etc, etc.

This was absolutely the 1st airliner toy I ever owned (I was 3 at the time), and would be thrilled to find another. Here is a page from the 1964 Sears Christmas catalogue featuring this toy:

I've contacted MARX playset specialists before, and they say it's definitely not from them, and then pretty much no help after that.

Many thanks in advance for any further enlightenment!

Best, Christian

Welcome Christian to the forum. That playset is a new one for me. I have two of the earlier Marx 1960-61 sets and lots of the aircraft and accessories. Were the aircraft plastic or metal?

Thanks so much, good to be here!

The fuse crowns were metal, while everything below the cheatline was molded silver/grey plastic.

BTW, enjoyed your post in Tin toys about all those different airplanes you got stick time on!

Fascinating stuff...

Yes, I'd really like to find more info about this toy, and hopefully at some point, this will all trickle down to the guy in "In the know" as it were. Would love to find another someday, and I'd sure like to see the box art as well.

Sears "International Airport" Playset-1964

Tomiyama of Japan is definitely the manufacturer. The firm is still active today as Takara Tomy. I think 1964 is the only year. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure what kind of planes those are: Boeing 707-120 or 720?

Because 1964 is the year in which I was born, this set would've been too early for me. The first one I had was Remco's "Voice Control Kennedy Airport" in 1968.

Thanks so much Tone, I'm thrilled to finally have this info coming together. Been hunting for a brand name for a long, long time.

Funny, did another google search, and led me right back here:

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=853&start=40

"Boeing 707s with Jet Terminal: four small jets in set with triangular terminal building, ground equipment and play mat, short forward fuselages, grey plastic with metal upper bodies, red/white/blue airline colors for AA, Pan American, TWA and United, Tomiyama."

The info was here at MAC the whole time.

The airplanes are an approximation of a short 707...bit more like a 720 with a 707-100 wing. UAL only flew the 720. One fun toy...
