although not up with the top scorers of the 'experten' pilots of the Luftwaffe, all of Heinz Knoke's 54 kills were in the west.


and they came at a price. Knoke was shot down 6 times and force landed at least once in his career.

numerous spells in hospitals and the amputation of a thumb

must have made getting back into the cockpit of a 109 an act of extraordinary courage.

in the spring of 1944, at the age of just 23, Knoke was promoted to Gruppenkommandeur of II./ JG 11.

the youngest Gruppenkommandeur in the Luftwaffe.

the day after Knoke was promoted, he was shot down by Capt Cannon of the 354th FG

but before bailing out, Knoke was able to shoot down Cannon's P-47 as he overshot Knoke's 109.
Cannon spent the rest of the war as a POW

Knoke survived the war and in the 50's became famous for his book, 'I flew for the Fuhrer'. I read it back in the early '90s.

'Lilo' was his wife's nickname. Heinz Knoke died in 1993 at the age of 72.

The nice thing about "toy" airplanes is that it's OK if the prop spins! On "models" they need to be secured without drooping or sagging.

for the price of a AAA battery and a spray with some CRC, its not a lot to get the motor working again. and they're so easy to do.

I am however thinking of branching out into plastic models. a mate of mine has started doing it and its got me thinking.....

I never made it to get an electric engine again working in a Dinky. No chance. If somebody knows a "trick".. I would be glad to learn.

I also have several Japanese made "Dieca Hobby" planes. These are same size as Dinky and they also have an electric engine. From five Dieca-planes, four still have the engine working!

So far the comparison between "Made in England" and "Made in Japan"....

spray CRC 5.56 liberally into one of the vent holes in the side of the motor casing(the can normally comes with a thin tube attachment for getting into tight spots). spin the shaft a few times, then wipe out excess. chances are that'll fix it. they're very low torque motors and unable to overcome the internal friction that's built up over time. any light lubricant will reduce the internal friction sufficiently. CRC works really well.
