Comet Authenticast plane collection

Postby baggermcguirk » Thu Nov 17, 2016 6:59 am

Hello to all plane enthusiast. I wanted to share a recent collection of comet Authenticast planes that I recently acquired. There are over 320 planes in this collection from all the countries except Netherlands. They all have the original boxes and most have never been taken out of the boxes. This was an overstock from a hobby shop. I am in the process of cleaning some of the boxes. The planes seem to be in excellent condition no rusting or paint chipping . I was hoping to get some imput on the rarity of certain planes compared to others. I am adding some pictures but can add more upon request.

Thank you very much Michael, I don't see these with boxes to often. Do you know what they sell for on average with a box? I am sure it depends on the rarity of the plane?

Does the series feature any helicopter or autogiro/gyroplane toys?

I don't think so. Here's a list from the later civilian releases.

Here is a list of all the Lead models made in 1/432 scale. The authenticast catalog list in each of the 6 catalogs was slightly different with some models not available in later catalogs and some newer models added over time. If anyone wants a spreadsheet of this information let me know and I can send you more information than you probably will ever want. I still own the remaining comet / authenticast brass masters (and pewter masters for some of the models for which the master was destroyed in making the molds). These were used to make the molds that the authenticast models were made from. The first models made after a mold was made were in pewter to preserve a "master", as the mold making process often destroyed the brass master.

Excellent! ...thank you!
So...who was the guy in Ft. Worth producing "new" ones from the original masters in the '90s? I think he used brass but each model was painted and finished. Lovely, attractive but about $40 each.

Michael,
It was Ed Pugh. He owns Reaper Miniatures and produced the DFC line of models. He made molds using the original brass masters. Of course, the models he produced were not in lead due to general concerns about lead models. The were made of a tin antimony mixture, I think. The lead models (comet authenticast) will also rot (called lead rot). DO NOT PLACE THE LEAD MODELS IN WOOD CONTAINERS AS THIS JUST MAKE THEM DETERIORATE QUICKER. There is a lot more information in this forum about the 1/432 scale models already cataloged, so I will just refer folks to look over the previous posts.

Thank you so much for providing this list. I thought the ones I have are from the 40's but i guess they could be reproductions from the 90's since they have no lead rot. Does anyone have any wartime Comet Authenticast with boxes? All of my boxes say 1945. That is amazing on obtaining the masters are there any pictures of them anywhere thanks

Couple points. The first Authenticast Catalog was produced in 1945. The models sold were likely combinations of models actually produced for war time but never deployed and some that were made post WW2 using the molds made during wartime. Authenticast changed paint colors a little from the comet war time models, and may or may not have the hole completely through the model which is found in the wartime issues.

The lead rot is not seen in all models, either. Just some that have had exposure to something (?) which may have caused it to start. I have seen only a few examples of lead rot, and those were a result of being stored in a wood box which leaches an acid and where there was some dampness in storage. The 1945 models are likely 1945 models which were kept safely.
