Just wrapped up this Charlmar tonite... Its got a new fin, landing gear, props, paint and details- These are the smaller Marx airplanes with a 17" wingspan and, I suspect, designed with HO scale in mind much like its older and bigger brethren which was considered "O" gauge.

I meant to post this as well using a movie reference, "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly".
On left is an NOS Charlmar Super 7 with box and decals (Good), middle is my Overhaul (Yea, that's really BAD, Man) and the abused version which was poorly welded by some hack (the UGLY)

Were these planes always sold with the decals on a sheet for the owner to apply?

Yes, Decal sheets for the owner to apply. This is in the golden age of plastic models and Marx marketing wisely saw that "allowing final assembly" with decal application reduced their manufacturing cost and gave little Johnny or Jane bragging rights with their older model building siblings.
