Aircraft Models Never Operated by Airlines

Postby car15 » Sat Jun 18, 2011 4:03 am

I love models of aircraft that where never operated by airlines, specially Eastern Air Lines. Does anyone else have these type models?

Eastern actually did operate L-1011s - maybe not the 200 models - but they did operate them.

Wikipedia's list of planes they used...
Pitcairn Mailwing with which began operations as Eastern Air Transport Inc.
• Ford Tri-Motor from 1930–1932
• Fokker F-X
• Curtiss Condor from 1930–1934
• Lockheed Electra from 1935–1936
• Douglas DC-2
• Douglas DC-3 from 1936–1953
• Curtiss Commando
• Martin 4-0-4 of which Eastern had the largest fleet with 60 of the type in operation.
• Douglas DC-4
• Convair 440 Metropolitan
• L-1049 Super Constellation from 1951–1968
• Douglas DC-7B from 1953–1966
• Lockheed L-188 Electra beginning 1959
• DC-8-21 beginning in 1960
• DC-8-61/63
• Boeing 720-025
• Boeing 727-25 beginning in 1 February 1964 with Eastern as the launch customer.
• Boeing 727-225 beginning in 1968
• DC-9-14 beginning in February 1965
• DC-9-31
• DC-9-50
• Boeing 747-100 leased from Pan Am before the L-1011s arrived
• Boeing 747-200 NTU
• L-1011-385-1 TriStar beginning in 1972
• Airbus A300B4
• Boeing 757-225 beginning in 1983
• Douglas DC-10
• Lockheed JetStar for corporate use.

On the subject of models of planes not operated by the airline depicted...

Ertl had a nice TWA 737-200 model under their Jet-Trans/Air & Space brands.

How about this ? I acquired it from a from a friend whose dad was a VP of sales at Lockheed back in the early '80's.

Lockheed never was able to sell the L-1011 in Latin America. The A-300 won out despite miserable two-engine performance from locations like Quito, La Paz, and Bogota. Out of Quito or La Paz you can use the twin jet and take off light flying down the mountains to Guayaquil or Santa Cruz before flying a longer haul segment. But maybe that was more cost effective given the relative price of the Airbus vs. L-1011 especially back in those days when Airbus was very aggressive in building market share.

The Equitoriana example I have is the only model Lockheed had made for the South American market. It is a Pacmin model.

.. i got this MD-11 from an employee of Lufthansa Technik. Lufthansa was a DC-10 operator and the cargo department have a lot of MD11. This is also the old blue stripe livery and where give by mcDonnall to lufthansa . Made by packmin and is made during the "fiberglas-period". Have some cracks in the clear coating but still displays nice.

There were a few exceptions: I remember AeroPeru operated 1011s in the early 80s. I liked those bright Ecuatoriana colors back then, and there were many variants.

Tone,

Aero Peru or Faucett were not Lockheed customers. The aircraft they operated were bought or leased used aircraft. Lockheed never made an L-1011 sale to a Latin American carrier.

APA Dominicana, and, to include all Hispanic countries, Iberia also used L-1011's. But you are right, they were not sold directly by Lockheed.

I'd loved to see the L-1011 in the colors of more Latin airlines, like Aerolineas Argentinas, Ecuatoriana, LAB Lloyd Aereo Boliviano, Mexicana, Dominicana, and...ejem, my country's own airline, Prinair.
