Stratoliner ashtray

First post to here-hope I'm doing this right. Hopefully someone can help me find one of these-it's a Stratoliner ashtray which don't come up for sale too often and I always lose the bidding when they do. If you know of one for sale I'd be interested in acquiring one.

Welcome Ed! While I have a large collection of ashtray models I have yet to acquire a Stratoliner. When I do I sure hope we aren't both reaching for it at the same time!

Thanks Ladd-I'm a huge aviation nut and have been flying for fun for over 25 years (I'm a machinist by trade) I recently started a website called canadianaerospace.weebly.com where I have a page about my airplane ashtrays, and also a Facebook page called "Edward's Airplane Ashtrays." Anyone is welcome to visit and post comments/photos of their collection. My current focus is mostly models by Allyn and Pastushin, but generally any aircraft that is mounted on an ashtray will catch my interest. If anyone is interested, I have a nice DC-3 airplane ashtray stand (the 3' high stand with DC-3 perched on top) that I'd be happy to trade for either a nice B-47 Statojet or Stratoliner shown below.

It would be quite an accomplishment to round up one each of all of the Allyn and Patushin ashtrays. Seems doable. But add in Riffe, Buehler, Raise Up, osgaard and................ Things can get out of control. But as I always say, "Anything worth doing is worth overdoing."

The ashtray thing becomes even more complicated when you find that Allyn issued their models on ashtray and regular stands. Is an Allyn on a plain stand still an ashtray model? You can't pass up a nice Allyn just because it's not on an ashtray base. Next you find that Allyn's moulds pop up in the hands of Pacmin. Is it still an Allyn? You can't pass up a nice example of an Allyn just because it was issued by Pacmin. Now you have an ever expanding galaxy of models to collect from. I love it.

Below is a shot of military Allyns and a couple of other makers. While they are not all ashtrays the Allyns were available both ways. They ended up together because they were all shiny chrome except for the Verkuyl Thud.



There are two B-52's in the above case. One is the most common one representing an early model Buff up to the D-Model. There is also a less common late H-Model which is distinguished by its short tail, slightly different wing and early fan-jet engines. So if you have only one Buff you can't stop there!

I would not even want to guess how many different ashtray models were produced by Raise Up. I have a Viscount, DC-7 and a Connie. When you multiply that times the number of different liveries they did large scale models in the possibilities are staggering. Below is my Raise Up Capital Viscount.





Back to your original post. Yes, I too am seeking a Boeing 307. It would look nice right here

As usual, I'm jealous. Nice stuff Ladd. I would like to visit sometime if you are willing. I have a daughter working a GE until December in Louisville. Are you far away?

BTW, I have found a supplier of a pretty close match of the Pastushin DC-3, 3-bladed props. Keep that handy if you need some.

Oooo...I could use a pair of Pastushin props for their DC-3! What the story on that?

I apologize for the rushed shots. I am saving for a new camera... Anyway, I found some of these while scavenging for parts kind American Picker style. The first picture shows an original Pastushin DC-3 prop on the right and my "Picker Prop" on the left. The hole size is spot on! The overall diameter is a .5 mm longer on the new props, just a hare's breath. The Picker units are a teeny bit more pointed at the tips as well. My conclusion is that the same company probably made both with very similar molds and that the props used by Pastushin were not in house productions. The "Picker Props" may be a later run and are NOT PAINTED (fine with me anyway). They do need a smidge of smoothology with a fine grit emory board. An easy operation which I can perform. I am negociating for 25 pairs as we speak. The hub/shaft combos I made as the weanie little Pastushin nails just don't do it for me, not scale enough. I sent a pair to a coIlector in Europe, he loved them and he's ready order more. I can let everyone know when I have more stock ....
