Tin Toy Plane Production List

This "project" is a list of the toy model aircraft that I have seen at shows, in magazines, in auctions, and reference books. They are listed in alphabetical order and by type. The list concentrates on items made 1950 and later that were intended to be playthings-not the various "collector series" items from 1980 onward (Schylling, et al). Except for Marx products, items dating from the beginning through the 1930s are uncommon.

With few exceptions, I have excluded novelty toys with large figural pilot heads, airplane caricatures that perform stunts, small airplanes that circle pylons or towers, constructor kit airplanes, and airport play sets.

PLEASE keep checking back as details are added, and thank you very much for your input!

Brief Background

Industrialized nations such as US, Germany, France and Japan were producing toys out of tin plate by the end of the 19th century. By 1910 the airplanes had appeared! While the earliest examples were soldered and painted, the majority of tin toy airplanes feature lithographed finishes. Through the 1930s, toy planes were whimsical and colorful. After World War Two ended the factories turned to making more realistic toy models, sometimes with battery-powered motors.

Safety standards and costs for labor and materials ended tin toy production in the late 1970s and 1980s. The tin toys seen in shops today are "adult collectibles" chiefly manufactured in the People's Republic of China-a nation with a long and rich history of metalwork.

ALPS SHŌJI
This Japanese brand issued at least one small toy plane in the 1930s as the "Japan Alps Toy Co": a small and stylized "pop pop" float plane powered by a candle. The heat created suction in a tube inside the plane's hull, propelling the toy through water. Some friction planes with dazzling lithography were made in occupied Japan in the 1940s. While none was a realistic model, by the mid-1950s Alps Shoji was able to offer large and detailed toy models of the Super Constellation and Stratocruiser airliners and a beautiful Cessna 310 twin-engined private plane that might have been inspired by the television program Sky King. Around 1966 the brand advertised its "Mystery Action" battery toy 707s that would stop, run, and then repeat the action with lighted plastic engines. In the late 1970s Alps was still selling battery toy airplanes, a series of contemporary airliners (DC-10, TriStar, Concorde), some of which were made from interchangeable parts. All featured visible plastic interiors and could rotate on display stands.

A Brands Part 2

Postby Tone » Thu Jan 20, 2011 3:23 am

ANANIADIS, ANANIAS - AA Trademark
This trademark appears on a box for a battery-operated Boeing 707. The date of manufacture could have been as late as the 1980s. The plane appears to have been made using old tooling that Marx had used in the 60s and 70s, yet the country of origin is listed as Greece, and the plane is in the markings of Greece's national airline.

A toy twin-propeller airliner battery toy is presumably earlier. It bears lithographed Olympic Airways titles and symbols superimposed on American Airlines color scheme, complete with “AA” eagle logo and red lightning bolt cheat line.

Airliner:
Twin-engine Airliner, 14” WS, 13” L, battery, switch on wing, two red lights on wings and one atop fuselage, white plastic 4-blade propellers, silver, red cheat line, red metal cowlings, medium blue “AA” on rear fuselage, “D7C” on tail fin, AA N4070A on wings, “Olympic Airways” titles and multi-ring logo.

Airliners, Jet:
Aérospatiale BAC Concorde #113, 20 1/2" L, battery, plastic with tin tail fin and upper rear fuselage, visible seating, "Concorde" titles, red cheat line, light blue stripe on fin, “F-CONC,” “Air France Concorde” rectangular labels on wings, identical to Alps toy.
Boeing 707, 14" WS, battery, same as or very similar to Nikko Gangu/Marx toy in TWA colors, with AA trademark.
Boeing 707 #116, 14" WS, battery, visible seating with clear plastic covering, plastic underparts, silver/white with dark blue Olympic titles, stylized Greek shipping pennant and multicolored Olympic linked rings.

AOKI (Fancy Toy)
Trademark is “Fancy AOKI Toy” within a circle. The Twin-engined Airliner is identical to the Daiya toy and shares its fuselage and tail with a Comet IV jet.

Airliner:

Twin-engine Airliner, 10" WS, friction, four-bladed metal props, silver, pale blue wings, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, “The Flying Dutchman” in white on dark blue cheat line (both sides), red/white/blue tail fin flash, red KLM PH-DSJ on wing.

AOSHIN (ASC TOY)
Aoshin's most famous "aerospace" item is an amusing fantasy toy: a rocket-launching flying saucer with a robot pilot. Aoshin also made friction toys of the famous F-86 Sabre jet. One variant features cannons on the fuselage that move with a recoil action as the plane moves forward.

Fighters, Jet:

Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, 10 1/2" WS, friction, chrome silver, orange plastic nose and wingtip tanks, black Luftwaffe cross insignia, BD 236.
Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, 15” L / 8" WS, friction, chrome silver, red plastic nose and wingtip tanks, US Air Force, “USAF” “F-104” in black.
Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, black with numerous small stars and Japanese characters/graphics including robot and space station on wings, orange upper fuselage, yellow wing and tail edges, orange plastic needle nose and wingtip tanks, tin pilot head under plastic canopy (Suspected).

North American F-86F Sabre, 9" WS, friction
-Red/white, USAF "Super Sabre" titles.
-Silver overall, USAF "Super Sabre" titles.
-White, two moving cannons on fuselage, clear canopy with pilot, black/red chequer markings, "F-86-974."

Helicopters:

Skylark, three-bladed main rotor, silver with pilot figure at controls.

Light Aircraft:

Single-engine Low-wing Monoplane, 12” WS, 10 ½” L, friction, 2-bladed metal propeller, cream/red, lithographed pilots in blue cabin, “AP 301” “N-1263.”

ARMINDO MOREIRA LOPES - AML
There is a twin propeller airliner made in Portugal by Armindo Moreira Lopes, or AML. The all tin toy reminds one of the Marx and Wyandotte steel airliners in shape It is similar to an airplane with tin wings and plastic parts by the Portuguese firm Pe Pe.

Airliner:

Length 8”, wingspan 8 ½”, unpowered, 3-bladed metal propellers, silver body with punched-out windows, blue wings with streamlined wheel pants and metal wings, red horizontal stabilizers, green rudder.

ARNOLD
Arnold was one of the famous German toymakers that used heavy gauge metal for its toy planes. The firm issued many types of toys over the decades it was active. The toy planes below lack intricate detail, but one might argue that rivets would be invisible on a small model. All airline liveries are accurate. The Super Constellation, seen in the 1959 FAO Schwartz catalog in TWA colors, is an exceptional model that may be found either with or without wing tip tanks. Some "Connies" feature punched-out windows like those seen on American pressed steel toy airplanes, a less common feature for a lithographed tin toy. Some examples of the Caravelle were made in France with visible interiors and moving hostess figurines.

Airliners:

Douglas DC-6, 11" WS, wind-up, grey plastic three-bladed props, buttons below the wings control the direction, round tail fin, silver/white with the following liveries:
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, silver/off-white with blue-green markings, "De Vliegende Hollander" on one side and "The Flying Dutchman" on the other.
SABENA Belgian World Airlines, silver/off-white with blue-green markings.
SAS Scandinavian Airlines System, silver/off-white with dark blue and red markings "SK SAS."
Swissair, silver/off-white with red markings and blue titles.

Air France, silver/off-white with dark blue markings, red "Super G" titles on lower fuselage, F-BHBB.
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, silver/off-white with blue-green markings, "De Vliegende Hollander" on one side and "The Flying Dutchman" on the other, two lithography variants with different cheat lines, simple or multiple.
Lufthansa, silver/off-white with blue and yellow markings.
TCA Trans-Canada Airlines, silver overall with red markings.
TWA Trans World Airlines, silver/off-white with red markings, Star of America titles near nose, N6921C or N7102C, may be found with label atop fuselage commemorating Richard Nixon 1960 presidential campaign.

Tony,

Arnold also did a Douglas DC-8 in KLM and SAS (scale around 1/100, i.e. span 40 cm), an acrobatic plane "Flying Wonder", which is a mixture between ME-109 and STUKA and last but not least don't forget the Helis S-55 and the very rare Rotodyne!

ASAHI GANGU - ASAHI TOY CO (ATC)
One can easily identify ATC products because the firm's trademark is Santa Claus carrying his sack of toys. The DC-4M "Canadair Four" in Canadian Pacific colors is a fine model. This firm also issued a tin replica of Japan's best-known airliner, the twin-turboprop Nihon YS-11. The firm's address, seen on a 1970s Boeing 747 box, was No. 2-7 2-chome, Kuramae, Daito-ku, Tokyo, Japan.

BAJS (?) (FOUR LEAF CLOVER, inside circle or square)
These toys were probably made in Poland, circa 1980s-90s. Internet sellers based in Bulgaria, Poland, and other former Soviet bloc nations sometimes offer tin and plastic toy friction airplanes for sale. These toys resemble S2 (Saito) and Jimmy Toys products but they are made in different colors and feature original lithography. The lithography always features the four-leaf clover design inside a circle or square. Name is questionable because "Bajs" apparently does not mean something nice.

Fighters:

Biplane-SPAD SXIII, 4 3/4" WS, plastic, spinning 3-bladed prop, plastic with tin upper wing inlay and upper fuselage, similar to Saito S2 Toy but without pilot head, in the following color schemes:

BANDAI
A large and diverse firm, Bandai started out with tin toys in the 50s and quickly became famous for its extensive series of finely-detailed autos. Numerous planes appeared over the years and could be small and naïve-looking or surprisingly accurate models. The "Douglas" twin-prop plane and the "Silver Moon" four-prop plane share the same mold. A notable Boeing 707 cargo jet features a swing tail and came equipped with a payload of four tin vehicles. A Douglas Sky Rocket lithographed with "Tetsujin 28" titles and super hero "Astro Boy" graphics arguably is the most famous and certainly the most valuable Bandai toy aircraft. The trademark changed over time, but it was often a fancy, stylized "B" inside a very square "C."

BILLER
Biller was a German firm that concentrated on novelty toy airport scenes with small airplanes or helicopters that revolved above them, often rising and landing. Biller, however, made a fine Vickers Viscount 700 series airliner. It came packaged in a square box and it did not come apart in two pieces, as many toy airplanes do. The Viscount has a folding lever under the body to work the propellers, and it also has a lever atop the fuselage to retract and lower the landing gear. Small opaque plastic 4-bladed propellers were fitted. The Viscount was available as a battery-operated flight deck simulator. The trademark is an italicized "B" to which is attached a wind-up key.
