Suspension or "Circling" Toy Helicopters

Postby hovermd » Tue Nov 11, 2014 6:57 pm

This post is dedicated to suspension or "Circling" toy helicopters...

A whole series of toys were designed to be hung by a string from the ceiling for play. Some of the first aircraft toys that used this design were Zeppelins.

But, there are quite a few helicopter AND airplane toys made in this design as well.

The earliest versions use a wind-up motor to spin a propeller mounted on the tail of the aircraft. The propeller would have 2 or 3 lightweight plastic blades, often transparent in color. Once wound up, and with a little shove, this rear-mounted pusher prop causes the toy to revolve in a circle, simulating flight.

On some helicopter versions, the main rotor spins.

Still other toys have wheels that are driven by the wind-up motor as well. This feature allowed a kid to play with the toy on the floor or table more like traditional wind-ups.

I'll start the post with one of the more common helicopter examples, the "H-2 Circling Helicopter" made by Modern Toys (Masudaya) of Japan:

Interestingly, Masudaya also made this toy in an "H-1" version, but the original box seems to have stayed the same:

Note that this example has it's original string still attached.

Here's another Modern Toys (Masudaya) of Japan example, the "Navy No. 8" version:

Masudaya made at least one other slightly different version that I've seen, the "UR 46."

Here is the EHN (Emil Hausmann) VX 100 made in Western Germany:

EHN also made a green "U.S. Army Rescue" helicopter version.

These EHN toys feature rotating wheels under the skids, as I mentioned earlier.

This a really nice HCT 16-C example by Nikko Gangu Kogyo of Japan. I really like the tricycle gear and 4-rotor design:

Nikko also made a similar 15-C example with a different green litho that reminds me of a taxi cab. Interestingly, the original box to the 16-C above actually says "15-C" on the label.

The inspiration for the helicopters above came in part from earlier toys like the Lehmann 766 Dirigible "Shenandoah":

This mint in the box example sold for over $2700.

For the airplane and jet lovers, here are a couple fixed wing examples...

The jet is by Modern Toys (Masudaya), the older Circling Plane is by Nomura Toys (T.N.), and the single engine prop airplane is by an unknown Japanese manufacturer.

As for the 'earliest' suspension helicopters etc: you're forgetting the diecast Tootsie Fly'n'gyro, the Britains autogiro and also 'lead' toys - like the Tootsie Zeppelin!

Good point...

The W. Britain #1392 Autogiro box art clearly shows how the toy was rigged to run down a string from two anchor points.
