A Corgi BF-110 Gets A Makeover

Here is another of my recent diecast repaint projects. This time the subject was a spare BF-110C which Corgi put out in a two green splinter scheme with a white nose, circa the Battle of Britain. Unlike kit-makes, where you can pre-shade the various parts before painting to obtain basic weathering effects and panel line highlighting, as well as doing the canopy and other parts piecemeal before assembly, here we are dealing with a completed model. So, obviously, the procedure is different. I thought I'd share pictures of the operation as it unfolded. We start with a picture of the original model:

Now, here's an artist's rendition of the desert BF-110 I wanted to replicate:

Here is the first shot of the model after the markings were sanded down and the first coat of sand and yellow was laid in on the canopy frames, the engine cowls and the vertical stabilizers. The fuselage band has also been applied:

Next, a second coat where needed, plus the light blue/gray has been extended up the sides of the fuselage:

Now, I added the decals:

Then, some mottling:

This was followed by weathering and many small refinements, plus the sanding down of any small paintbrush or other smears, bumps, etc.

The preparation, prior to spraying with Testors Dullcoat to give the model a matt finish, also included darkening the mottles and the upper surface sand, via a wash, using a diluted darker brown solution. Then, the model was masked as a prelude to spraying:

Finally, some small touches, like painting in the wingtip lights, were added and this is the result:
