A Corgi HE-111 Gets Re-"Sand & Spinached"

Postby Epap » Mon Jan 10, 2011 10:11 pm

When Corgi put out its 1:72nd scale "Sardinia" HE-111 in a "sand & spinach" camouflage scheme a number of years back, it was panned rather harshly by collectors----and not without reason. The main complaints concerned the hideous yellow used by the factory to replicate the sand color on the upper fuselage and the overly dark blue on the model's undersides. Also, the green "spinach" blotches were laid on in a totally unrealistic manner and then there were other omissions inherent in the mold, such as the lack of fuel ports on the wings, a missing landing light on the left wing, etc. While the snow was falling a few weeks ago, trapping me at home, I decided to revisit this model and performed a 90% redo. The interesting feature of my repaint was the fact that I used brushes throughout, rather than spraying, yet achieved almost the same "feathery" effect by some fine sanding, diluting the blotches on their edges with thinner and the heavier application of green in the inner portions of each blotch. In any event here are before and after pictures of my humble handiwork. The first picture shows the model in its original form in a topside view:Image

Brushes for me every time, airbrushes are over rated and need constant attention, and they do not always make for good finishes either, great job on the He.111 what a difference it makes.
