Oberfeldwebel Alfred Surau, 9./JG 3 'Udet'

Surau scored his first kill in February 1943, on the Russian front.

When III./JG3 was transferred to the Western Front 6 months later, his tally had raced to 41.

between August and December 1943 III./JG 3 shot down 31 aircraft. mostly American four-engine bombers, for the loss of only two pilots killed

One of those was Surau.

His 46th and final kill came during the second Schweinfurt raid on the 14th October 1943.

But the B-17 didn't go down without a fight and after inflicting serious damage on its attacker, Surau despite serious wounds, managed to bail out

however he died later the same day in hospital at Wertheim, aged 24.

Hi Norri,

another great model from you.

Just in this moment I realise, that the original yellow 6 was a G-version of the BF-109, while the Dinky is of course the E-version.

Did you make a decision how to go on now?
Moving to plastic models?

I personally don't like plastic models at all. On the other hand there are no good metal kits available.
I have the Chinese made Revell metal kits of the BF-109 E and F-version, but I do not like them that much.
They are pre-painted and rather bold in fitting.

The only real accurate metal kits I know are the past ones from Casadio. They had FW-190 and Spitfire.
Marushin is also good choice, but they are expensive and there are only Japanese types apart from a Mustang.

thank you for your comments Chris. you are of course correct, it was as you pointed out a G-6, which regrettably, Dinky never produced.

I bought a friend of mine a 1/32 scale revell HE-219 for Christmas and while I was visiting, helped him airbrush a 1/32 FW-190 he was building. its very tempting and I'd love to have a go at plastic models myself, but you've hit the nail on the head; they're a bugger to put together. not sure I have the patience!
