Dinky Box sets

Postby YGG » Fri Apr 18, 2014 9:23 pm

I am hoping for some guidance from more experienced collectors of Dinky aircraft.

I obtained a small number of Dinky aircraft in the years 1955-1957, just the ones for sale at that time, after which, in a thoroughly play-worn condition, they remained more or less hidden away until recently. Over the last year, I have added more, and now have about 72 distinct aircraft, with duplicates something like 130 in total.
My goal is to set up a display of these Dinky aircraft. How to organize the display? One way is to use the organization suggested by the presentation gift box sets (or whatever they should be called collectively).
So, I would like to assemble some of these individual items into the Box Sets that emulate the ones that Dinky issued, with boxes that I will supply for the most part- I am not going to go chasing after old bits of cardboard...

Now, which sets should I try to assemble? Is this a forum where I could get some guidance?

you're certainly in the right spot. my reference material on gift sets is limited though to the Binns Rd 60 through 68 sets (1935-41). happy to help you out with those. which aircraft do you have?

there were of course a few more, the French dinky gift set No 60 and 64. JW could no doubt advise on those.

in the meantime this might help

Thanks, Norri, the pictures at the link are informative. It is mainly the sets from 60 to 68 that I am looking at assembling.

But I am in the midst of some sort of networking issue. I cannot connect with my main computer, where I have all my notes to copy from, as well as photos of some of the aircraft that I have. I am using a laptop to send this note. Hopefully I can respond properly before too long.

Cheers, Terry

Hello YGG,
It is a nice idea to show your planes in a presentation box. As a very dedicated collector on dinky planes, just as Geoffrey Webster was too, I have almost all the pre war individual and presentation boxes in my collection. Now they are hard to find and the rarest such as 65 and 68 almost impossible to find. Set 60 and 61are the most common. There are some replica boxes for sale, however the quality is often poor. For post war models you can find many replica individual boxes.
It might a good idea to create your own boxes of cardboard in dinky style to put your planes in. The presentation is much better then showing the models separately. You can put them together in themes like military, civil, helicopters, manufacturer etc.
I also will attend you on the book Geoffrey Webster wrote on Dinky toy aircraft. Still available at http://www.blurb.com, Dinky toys aircraft. You will find a lot of information and all the rare planes and boxes. A must for every collector.

My internet access is constrained for another 2 weeks, but here goes.

I attach photos of set 60, early, with colourful livery. As you can see, I have only half of the set so far. A 60f Cierva autogiro for this set is on its way to me from Europe. The undercarriage of the 60a Atalanta is broken and will be fixed.

I have been unable to locate any photos of box set 68. Do you know of one?

I am working to assemble the contents of box set 68, of which I have 3 so far, photos to follow. But I would sure like to see a photo of an original, or even a replica of that box set.

As for box set 65, I have almost assembled the contents, photos to follow. The one remaining one, the Ju-90 D-AURE, is en route to me.

Hello Terry,
You have some interesting planes. The Atalanta cream with green roundels on the wing and green tail is a very rare one. Only produced for a very short time 1934. Until now I have only seen three with this livery, one is in my collection. So you are very lucky to have one and be very carefull with the restauration. The model was part of the first set 60 with the Art deco style label of a Armstrong Whitworth Atalanta. Later boxes showed six planes on the label.
There is also a livery cream with red dots on the wing and red tail. Another rare livery is the white Atalanta with Chevron pattern.
After these first models the Atalanta was made with sunray pattern. In 1936 the models had registration G-ABTI.
Your white model with registration, despite the condition, is also not common. Standard colour for this livery is gold.
For a short time 1934 there were also two tone models, Yellow with blue wingtips, Silver with blue, Red with cream, Gold with blue, white with blue.
Colours Sunray:
Yellow, blue. Silver, blue. Red, cream. Gold, blue. White, blue.
Colours registration:
Gold, Red, Cream, Green, Yellow, Silver, White, Light blue, Mid blue, Dark blue with white registration.
First box with Atalanta label

Hello Terry,
The boxed sets 68 are very rare and not often offered for sale. I never saw a replica box for this set.
There are in fact two different boxes. First with light camouflage models and later with dark camouflage. The first set for sure had a label on the lid. Same pictures as box 65 with names of the planes printed on the label.
My second box has no label, just a small sticker with Meccano Company of America. I presume that Meccano did not add a label anymore on boxes later in 1940 to save costs.

If you want more information you can contact me.
