Jacques, I don't know if the wheels are special, they look like standard french issue
That casting was for the last French production, before being transferred to the UK where the country code was changed and the painting hole added I believe. This modification was done after the 3 special Caravelles were issued{ Swiss, Algerie, SAS}

The one we have been searching for without success for years is the one the was produced in France after the UK production that would logically have the painting hole but with made in France and no engine cones.

BTW I just got back and your Dinky Aircraft book arrived. Great job.
You should not say your book is obsolete, and no one will order it anymore thinking at first that obsolete meant it is no longer available.

Geoff,

There does not seem to be a way to determine if the reference 997 and the painting hole were added in France or in England. This is why the variations 2 and 3 may be switched. The modification may have been done at Bobigny and the die shiped to Liverpool before any models were cast.

The three models Air Algérie, SAS and Swissair were cast in the original die before any change was done.

There is a model with 997 and painting hole made in France. It proves that the die has gone several times over the Channel.

I am sorry that the book was not delivred before you left for the states.

I have modified my previous message, thanks for the info.

That is the one I thought was so rare. Why would the french add a painting hole, only the UK factories used them, no?

Yes Geof but the tools dept. at Bobigny may have done the job for Liverpool. That job may even have been subcontracted. We know that some tools have been made by Thomas Keating of Billingshurst in Sussex.

Why was the drawing of the Renault Fregate (not issued) drawn at Binns road ?

Why were some drawings bi-lingual ?

Was the Vulcan cast in Liverpool or in Birmingham ?

Why was the Daimler armoured car (ref. 676) fitted with French hubs and tyres and painted in Calais although it was stamped MADE IN ENGLAND ?

Without any evidence, one can not maintain that the modifications have been done in Liverpool. The same applies to the variations 4 and 5 :

• with marking 60F and 997, with painting hole, MADE IN FRANCE, the cones in the jet's air intakes have been deleted.
• as above but MADE IN ENGLAND.

I just bought this book, and I think it is excellent. I am starting to assemble both UK and French presentation gift box sets and this book will assist greatly.

Could some of the Dinky collectors out there comment on the rarity of the French No. 60 Avions gift set?

In particular, how rare is the 1st Issue box (label has child pointing arm above table with three rows of vehicles - box is the blue (some say purple) version with light green (some say light blue) interior insert.

Thanks for your perspective...

Hello Mark,

Your question on the rarety of the French 60 box.
First I have to make a explanation on the types of the No 60 boxes. There are five different boxes of set No 60, see also the excellent book of Jaques Dujardin.
Set 1, box blue, dimensions 230x205x48 mm, label is Meccano Dinky toys with six Avions, the large plane is the Arc en Ciel. Planes vertical in box, inside card with 150 varieties.
Set 2, box blue, dim. 230x205x33 mm, label Avions. Note that the dimensions are wrongly printed in the Dujardin book French Dinky toy Airplanes.
Set 3, export box with number 60z. same as set 2.
Set 4, box blue, dim. 230x205x33 mm, label is Meccano boy with three rows of dinky toys.
Set 5, box red, dim 230x205x33 mm, label Meccano boy, no insert card, planes stringed to bottom of the box.

So the label with the Meccano boy is not the first set. The sets No 60, despite they are hard to find, are not extreme rare. From time to time they are offered at Ebay and auctions. Price depends on condition of box and planes.
I have catalogues were a box No 60 is visible with violet and gold pattern paper. Label on this box is the style label as on the first boxes 25 and 24, with just cars printed. In 35 years of collecting Dinky aircraft, I have never seen such a box and don't think it is ever made. Probably Meccano France planned the box and then decided to make a special label with Avions.

I will take new pictures of my boxes to show the differences.
John Beugels.
