Douglas DC-4E

Postby MichaelB » Tue Feb 12, 2013 3:57 pm

Here's an interesting find on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-1950s-GENERAL-ELECTRIC-GE-METAL-ASHTRAY-DOUGLAS-DC-4E-AIRPLANE-MODEL-/111007193107?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19d88b5813
It's a Pashtutin, which isn't a surprise, but it also looking like an airliner version of the Douglas XB-19 as it is missing the triple tail of the DC-4E. GE was building superchargers (and etc) for Douglas (et al) at the time, but I've never seen a rendering of this variant.
Any opinions?
I think this piece may bring a fair return for the seller!

I think the seller is dreaming at that price

here is a blog that shows the same model but with the triple tail
http://sky-sovereign-dc-4e.blogspot.fr/

you are probably right about the single tail being a design study, the fuselage and sleeper windows sure come from the prototype DC-4E

Maybe...but...I've never, ever seen a single tailed version, especially from a vendor (GE). Obviously Douglas thought about it before abandoning the project.

My bet is that Douglas secured a large production of these models from Pastushin only to realize too late that the full-scale airplane it was a red herring. They probaly asked Pastushin to have the two fins removed and adjust the casting leaving the 4 engine format the focus and calling it the DC-4 without the "E" designation.
