Okay Model Sleuthers,
Pull out your research skills and enlighten me on these markings. Both aircraft are WW2 German models. One is a DO-17 and the other a BF-109. Both have unique markings that are a mystery. Can anyone shed light on what they represent? Was this a way to obscure the Luftwaffe markings or something else? The same style marking is a star with a circle inside plus additional vertical lines in the circle

Thanks, Tom

Hi Tom,
Some models of the Dornier DO 17 were sold to Yugoslavia in 1937. The insignia on the wings may correspond to an aircraft captured late in the war by the partisan air force of Josip Broz, Tito, since the insignia used by the pre-war Royal Yugoslav Air Force is totally different. The same may be true with the Fw 190 since Yugoslavian aircraft had similar markings without the vertical lines. It would have been an easy alteration.
regards,
Ed
