Hallmark 2013 Ornament

Postby MichaelB » Wed Jun 12, 2013 2:27 am

...is a GB Super Sportster Z. This is the yellow and black version, not the R11.
This will be the 17th in the series. Should be in the stores next month.
Astute collectors will remember they did the Red/White R11 in 2001. (Included pic is NOT of the ornament).
...at least it's not a Cessna...

Didn't see one, but I was only looking for this particular item - as part of a continuing series. They often have other "airplanes" in the line, but usually are the cartooned up in some way. You can find them on-line or we'll wait to see what develops.

That yellow/black toy model in your photo is a Dyna-Flite, correct? That one also came out as a red, white & blue issue but I think it was for a short time only!

You are correct on all counts, Tony!
The r/w/b GB issue is certainly an odd ball. Happily I was able to pick one up sometime later and add it to the collection. I don't think the GB was ever painted in those colors, but... Even the DF version in red/white isn't like the prototype!
Another oddity are the stickers on the Dynaflite red/white version - they are sometimes reversed. Not really a color variation, but just an interesting side piece to remember.
This is a nice little item from DynaFlite and the R11 is always a popular subject for a toy airplane. Maisto currently has one in their TailWinds line and the Hallmark piece will be the second one in their series.
Here are all three of the DynaFlite pieces:

MACer Dennis Ramsey had included a photo of other recent GB toy issues; I'm including that here. A recent contender is the Maisto GB.
So, I have question for you old-timers...Are there any pre-war GB issues? Except for the Edison issues, I haven't found a lot from the early post war issue...and the Edison is quite late in that regard.
In Dennis' photo we see what looks like an early GB issue; who made that?
Just curious that such a notable and distinctive aircraft wasn't used as a toy subject until the last few decades of the century. Even Hawk Models produced a nice plastic kit in the very early '50s.

C. A. W. (Wood)
I think
Lead toy in 2 sizes

(I originally posted this message using a cellular phone)

In the 70s Buddy-L made a tin and plastic caricature of a Gee Bee also, I know, later than a contemporary.

My that Hallmark decoration is the same size as a Dyna Flite. I was expecting a bit larger.

They are sold at Target too. I have seen 11 different planes: DH Comet Racer, GB, Stearman, Ag plane, Corsair, Pilon Racer, Turbo Mustang, Cannard, F-15/18, Blackhawk and Twin Bonanza

Hallmark 2014 Ornament

Postby Tone » Mon Jul 14, 2014 3:14 am

Hallmark 2014 ornament is out. It is a Howard High-wing Monoplane "Mister Mulligan" in off-white. I know I have seen a metal toy of this plane dating from the 30s. There is also another red/white Gee Bee named "El Chupacabra" (named after a legendary goat-eating monster).
